• In recent years, Fairmont Elementary School has faced some overcrowding, forcing the displacement of many kindergarten students to neighboring schools. In order to address this situation, District staff has proposed a few minor modifications to the Fairmont and Harding elementary schools' attendance areas. This change will affect kindergarteners and other incoming new 1-6 grade students living within the adjusted attendance areas beginning in the 2019-20 school year.

The change consists of moving four small areas currently assigned to Fairmont into the Harding attendance zone. This will affect kindergarteners and other incoming new students at Fairmont who live in the adjusted attendance areas and enter school in August 2019 and later. We expect the revised attendance areas will help balance enrollment over the next several years, alleviating some of the uncertainty felt by Fairmont families during the registration period.

District staff, in coordination with the principals at each school, will communicate these changes to families and obtain feedback at two meetings, December 20, 2018, at Harding at 7 p.m. and January 8, 2019, at Fairmont at 7 p.m.

The Board of Education will discuss this change at its meeting on January 9, 2018.

We are in the process of developing clear grandfathering and sibling rules to clarify and communicate the effects on families that live within the adjusted areas. School Locator, the on-line tool for parents to locate their student’s home school, will be updated prior to registration beginning mid-January 2019.

A map showing the proposed attendance area changes and a Frequently Asked Questions document are also available.
