Hello WCCUSD Community,

This month is packed with important observances that celebrate and honor some of the most critical aspects of our community. I encourage you to follow our Facebook and Instagram pages to view and share our acknowledgments this month.

We start with National Poetry Month, celebrating the beauty of language and creativity. We then recognize National Bilingual/Multilingual Learner Advocacy Month, which highlights the importance of inclusivity and supports our diverse student body. We also celebrate Dolores Huerta Day, paying tribute to a remarkable civil rights activist and labor leader in farmworkers' rights.

April is also Arab American Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the rich cultural contributions of our Arab American community. We recognize Adult Education Week, acknowledging the importance of lifelong learning and the role of education in personal and professional development.

Public Schools Month and School Library Month recognize the vital importance of public education and the role of our libraries and librarians in promoting literacy and access to 豆奶成人直播. We also recognize National Volunteer Week and Public Schools Volunteer Week, thanking our generous volunteers for their dedication and support.

Finally, we acknowledge Administrative Professionals Week, which honors the hardworking professionals who keep our schools running smoothly and efficiently every day.

Our community's diversity is what makes us unique and strong, and it is important that we continue to embrace and support one another as we move forward together. Let us work towards building a more inclusive and equitable district that provides every student with the opportunity to succeed and thrive. Together, we can achieve great things and create a brighter future for our district and beyond.

Join us for the 17th Annual Transition and Special Education Resource Fair on April 27th from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM. This event provides an excellent opportunity for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their families, service providers, and school district staff to learn about various resources, ranging from early intervention services to life after high school. Shannon Elementary Hosts the Special Olympics!

The 3rd annual Shannon Elementary Basketball Special Olympics was held on March 28, featuring various basketball skills stations, but the highlight of the day was undoubtedly the Unified Basketball Games. This year's event was particularly special, as it welcomed three ESN 4-6 grade classes from other schools, including Riverside, King, and Fairmont Elementary. The event was a great success and provided a fun-filled day for all the participants.

Contra Costa County Board of Education Accepting Student Member Applications

The Contra Costa County Board of Education (CCCBOE) will begin accepting applications on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, for a student member for the 2024-25 school year from rising juniors and seniors.

The Board will accept applications until Friday, April 26, 2024, at 5 p.m.

This is the second year students will be eligible to serve as members of the CCBOE. Currently, Sophia Nguyen from El Cerrito High School in the West Contra Costa Unified School District and Daphne Milich from Monte Vista High School in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District serve as the Board’s student members.

Student members of the Contra Costa County Board of Education are responsible for advocating on behalf of students and are considered full members of the board with certain exceptions. They can make motions that may be acted upon by the Board and cast preferential votes on all matters except those subject to closed session. Preferential votes are recorded in the minutes and cast before the official vote of the County Board. Preferential votes do not affect the final numerical outcome of a vote.

Student board members cannot participate in or receive closed session materials because those discussions often include topics such as student discipline or other sensitive matters.

Eligible applicants are any student enrolled in a public high school in Contra Costa County who will be a junior or senior in the 2024-25 school year. Priority will be given to students who currently attend or have previously attended a CCCOE school or program or have an immediate family member who currently attend or have previously attended a CCCOE school or program.

Applicants will be interviewed by an ad hoc committee of the CCCBOE and voted on by the full Board.
