Superintendent's Message: Total Solar Eclipse Safety Information For Monday, April 8, 2024

Dear WCCUSD Community,

Welcome back! I hope you had a fun, restful, and enjoyable Spring Break.

On Monday, April 8, a solar eclipse will be visible across many parts of the United States, and we want to ensure that you are well informed about the upcoming event.

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth, casting a shadow on the Earth's surface. We are excited about the opportunity to witness this rare astronomical event and are committed to ensuring the safety of students who will still be at school during this time.

While our community is not in the direct path of totality for the eclipse, we will experience some of its visual effects. In the Bay Area, the eclipse is expected to begin at 10:14 am and conclude around 12:16 pm. Its peak will occur at 11:13 am when the moon partially obscures the sun.

Many of our teachers will use the event as a learning opportunity for our students throughout the day, including when the eclipse is occurring.

In anticipation of the eclipse, we would like to share a few important safety tips:

  • Do not look directly at the eclipse, unless you have eclipse glasses that meet ISO 12312-2:2015 standards. Regular sunglasses are not safe to use.

  • Use proper solar filters on cameras and binoculars. Avoid the use of homemade filters or any other substitute for eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers.

  • If you don't have eclipse glasses, consider using indirect viewing methods (such as a ) to observe the eclipse safely.

Ensuring the safety of our students during the solar eclipse is critical. While students may be outdoors for various school activities such as class changes, recess, or physical education, they must understand and adhere to safety protocols. We kindly request that parents review safety procedures with their children, emphasizing never to look directly at the sun without proper eye protection. On the day of the eclipse, our teachers and staff will closely monitor students and remind them of the importance of protecting their eyes.

If you are sending your student to school with eclipse glasses, .

We appreciate your cooperation in ensuring our students a safe and enjoyable experience during this extraordinary astronomical event.

Sincerely,

Kenneth C. Hurst, Sr., Ed.D

Superintendent
